What’s Holding You Back?
I have been a dance teacher and coach for most of my life. When I coached high school, I discovered that teenage girls dance for many different reasons: to impress their parents or their peers, to put something on their college resume, to brag to friends or maybe… to just dance. No matter what the reason, I could always count on one thing – they would practice and perform to the best of their abilities. They knew if they didn’t give their all, they wouldn’t win the trophy, the award, or the recognition that their fragile self-esteem needed so badly.
Now as an instructor of adult women, I find myself in a very different scenario. Women who come to the studio are from many different backgrounds, ages, sizes, situations, and life experiences. Some haven’t danced for years. Some have never danced. Unlike my team of teenage girls, these women all have one thing in common – they are there to better themselves through dance. They all have been searching for something and they are there because they believe they found “it”.
Even though women dance because they want to, as an instructor, I often find these women holding back. They are scared, shy, unsure, and feel uncomfortable about themselves and how they move. Vitality Fitness and Dance gives women permission to dance, but it is my job to make sure they are being true to themselves and giving their all. I tell my students – Its ok to let your hair down, hold your chin up and move that beautiful body! All these women are there for the same exact reasons: to dance, to feel alive and to start loving themselves.
You deserve to love yourself and you deserve to be true to your soul by pouring it in to your dance!
We hold back in our daily lives as well. Always making up excuses as to why we can’t do “this or that”. Why we can’t chase our dreams. Why we can’t take those lessons. Why it isn’t OK for a single woman to take an expensive trip and treat herself.
Who says you can’t do the things you love and give it your all?
Not me – I say go for it!!
Give life your all and it will give back. I promise you…life will give back tenfold.
